The Rundown: 'The Invitation'

By Dallas
Basics
From Dorcel and esteemed director Kay Brandt comes the newest relationship drama in the proud tradition of Sugar and Spice, Unfolding, and The Lustful Wife. Janie (Kenna James) is a workaholic whose office commitments become so overwhelming, she's answering phone calls in the middle of sex with her boyfriend, Justin (Jay Smooth). "My phone had replaced my vibrator!" Janie observes dejectedly in the movie's narration.

Could the cure be an enigmatic weekend invitation to visit some of Justin's friends? It's to be a celebration of a "commitment ceremony," but that's just the beginning. Before long, secrets from the past and dormant passions will be getting their very own invitation to the party. At 187 minutes, The Invitation has the robust run time to contain (quite literally) fleshed-out sex scenes as well as long, frank dialogue exchanges that wouldn't seem out of place in a sophisticated stage play. Notably, it also contains very steamy moments in between the five formally delineated sex scenes.

Scene highlight(s)
In director Kay Brandt's Sugar and Spice, she showed an uncanny knack for incorporating culinary themes into her porn features. This trope returns in subtle but effective fashion in scene one, when Justin initiates his lovemaking with Janie by teasing her breasts with some cupcake icing. (Ali Larter rocked a similar visual in the 1998 mainstream hit Varsity Blues, but Brandt's use of it is much more effective and understated.) It neatly captures the unique physical connection the couple shares, while simultaneously establishing a certain trepidation that becomes key to later plot developments.

**Spoiler alert** (info below reveals plot details)

By the time we reach scene two, the mysteries of the Invitation are beginning to unfold. As Janie probes her hosts as the exact nature of the week's celebration, Gia Derza and Vanna Bardot enjoy a lesbian embrace in a room nearby.

Scene three strikes a dreamlike tone as Janie imagines a boy/boy/girl threesome unspool under lighting that suggests Dorcel's own trademark color scheme. Scene four allows Janie (and the audience) to eavesdrop on a boy/girl/girl threesome by video call. In the climactic final scene, Janie is finally comfortable enough to partake in an orgy with the weekend's other invitees.

Quotable
"Holding on to the old pain is not good for you and us and our relationship." (Justin tries to persuade Janie to see past some of her old feelings)

Why we love it
There are five full-fledged sex scenes in The Invitation, but some of its most thrilling moments occur in the passages between these blockbuster scenes. The chemistry between Jay Smooth and Kenna James is powerful, particularly as it evolves across the movie's running time. The sequence just after Janie watches the threesome, when she and Justin have steamy sex in reaction to what they've just seen, is tremendously erotic. It's not even a conventional porn scene in the usual sense. We don't see explicit shots of penetration, and the two actors are never even fully undressed.

But you'll feel the heat nonetheless as they escalate their pleasure toward orgasm. Best of all, this is simply the setup for the movie's climax, an orgy bathed in the same light as Janie's earlier apparent dream sequence. (Is it all just another fantasy on Janie's part? Brandt does not give a definitive answer, but the ambiguity is a scintillating, cinematic touch.)

James and Smooth also have several remarkably candid dialogue scenes in the movie, with the sort of a depth not often found in mainstream porn. They're two thoughtful, passionate people with insecurities and hangups to go along with their intelligence and beauty. Theirs is very much a modern relationship in a way that director Brandt seems uniquely suited to write and direct.
